Peripheral neuropathy

This is a generic term to indicate functional alterations and / or changes at the level of the peripheral nervous system.

Peripheral neuropathies include a heterogeneous group of pathologies characterized by peripheral nerve alterations related to their structure and / or function. The causes of a peripheral neuropathy are numerous, as well as the clinical patterns highlighted to such an extent that various classifications have been proposed according to etiopathogenetic, histopathological, anatomical and clinical parameters. From the clinical point of view, the following are important: the distinction in polyneuropathies (diffuse and symmetrical alterations of the nervous trunks) mostly of toxic, metabolic, deficient or inflammatory origin; mononeuropathies (alterations of individual nerves) mostly of traumatic origin; and multineuropathy (alterations of several nerves) mostly of vascular origin.

In these pathologies, the therapy is purely symptomatic and based on neuroprotection (citicoline).
